Travel specific brushes

That’s what I do. I don’t use synthetics at home, but their quick drying property wins me over when it comes to travel. On my last trip I took a badger with me, but regretted it when I had to pull out a dank brush for each morning’s shave.

My synthetic of choice is the 24 mm AP Shave Co. SynBad. I find this knot suits my lathering style the best of any synthetic I’ve tried (but it won‘t replace any of my badgers or boars when I’m at home). I carry it in a plastic prescription pill container with holes drilled in the top which cost me nothing thanks to my local pharmacist. I too don’t believe in downsizing my shaving and other grooming kit when I travel and the SynBad is right in my sweet spot for a shaving brush in terms of size; the only grooming item I have down sized is my aftershave splash which I carry in a 50 ml bottle so that it easily fits into the prescribed clear plastic bag for liquids, creams and gels needed to carry on an airplane.

I put a nice silvertip knot in an old rubberset travel tube. Great feel, probably because of the short loft (55mm), still very soft, but has a nice backbone.
I think I paid $7.50 for the tube and $17 for the knot.

Your choice obviously depends on personal preference but I take a Yaqi 24mm synthetic in a travel tube. A perfect fit and the brush is easy to dry.

I have the Muhle travel brush and it's great. I pair it with the R89 and the Muhle travel case:

I had this one and sold it, I wish now that I wouldn't have. I much prefer the knot in that smaller size than the larger Muhle Silvertip Fibre. This one seems denser and has more backbone. These days I used a travel tube or pill bottle, but the Muhle is very nice being self contained. I would also say that if your travel has you packing and moving each day then synthetic is clearly the way to go, but if you are set up in the same place for several days then the door is a bit more open to natural fibers as they will have enough air time.

I'm used to longer handles, so the R89 took a few shaves to get used to. I've never found a 19mm brush to be too small, and that is what the travel brush knot measures. Good things come in small packages. I still love mine, though I do take two razors on holiday -- don't want to get bored.

The one that i ordered is a 21mm knot, which i personally don't find too small (however i do like my chubby aswell )
I already have both the R89 and the EJ89, so i decided to buy one with a mach3 handle, just to have it.
