Not Ready for Prime Time

Three strokes into my shave with the Feather PRO blade I was confronted with the fact that it was not going to work. Three day's growth is not a major hurdle for any blade, but I could not find the right angle, regardless of pressure it was very uncomfortable, so I finished with the WS. I'm going to use a Schick Proline next shave and see how it goes. So far, my best shaves have been with guarded blades, but I really don't see how the "guards" could be impacting the shave.

The guards are thicker and therefore make the ‘jaws’ wider near the blade edge - maybe that affects the angle?

On the blade choice, I found using the guarded blades helped build technique and didn’t use any other until I felt very proficient. Not trying to teach you to suck eggs but are you still at the technique phase rather than the experimental phase?

I agree totally. I used the guarded for the first year and this during my honing and use of those other straights.

Keep using . It will come if you faint not.

Could it be you're asking too much of yourself this early in the journey? My first 4-5 shaves were anything but close.

As far as i can tell, the highest factor in gaining skills with a straight or a shavette is probably proficiency, i.e. there are people that don't have the proficiency to work with their hands preciselyand/or gently enough, so they will probably need longer "training", and there are people who are proficient enough to get good shaves from the start... We're all different in a lot of ways. If it werren't that way, everyone would be good with one single model of a razor, same kind of blade, same soap, same brush and same AS for a lifetime...
